If you’re in Haringey that new creative spend option is Tottenham Art Classes. They run drop-in art classes at the Beehive pub and at the Hub in Lordship Rec. We asked Taz, who set up the classes, to give us a run-down of what they’re all about, and why she set up the classes.
What can Time Credits members expect at a Tottenham Art Classes drop-in?
Members will get to experience a relaxed and welcoming daytime watercolour session or an evening of life drawing. You’ll get to meet other like-minded people who are friendly and passionate about art and being creative.
Why did you set up Tottenham Art Classes?
I wanted to meet like-minded people with similar interests and make new friends when I moved to Tottenham. I also wanted to get back into drawing locally but I only found courses where you had to sign up to 10 consecutive Saturdays which didn’t fit around my lifestyle. I then wondered if there were others living in Tottenham who were looking for local classes with the flexibility of coming along when they wanted. After discussing it with my partner and putting some of my savings aside, I decided to launch a weekly Thursday evening class of life drawing where you didn’t have to book and you just turn up. We set the price at £5 to keep it affordable, accessible and inclusive to all. After spending a lot of time promoting the new class through flyers and posters, our first class attracted almost 50 people which was incredible and unexpected.
Since then we’ve been going for over 18 months now and our offering of classes has expanded and includes daytime watercolour sessions to engage those around during the day, longer day courses in life drawing and painting, still life painting and more recently printmaking and illustration workshops. It’s been great seeing lots of people meet through our classes and get creative locally.
And why do you think it’s important to make classes available for people with Time Credits
Our classes are socially inclusive and welcome anyone who wants to get involved. We think our classes will greatly benefit people with Time Credits as they’ll feel inspired when they come along and feel proud of being part of a growing creative community in Tottenham.
